Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones (2002)

Cliegg Lars is a human male moisture farmer on Tatooine, father of Owen Lars and second husband of Shmi Skywalker. The StarWars.com Databank describes him as "modest, good-hearted," and records that he met Shmi at the spaceport of Mos Espa while she was enslaved to the junk dealer Watto, purchased her freedom and married her. He appears in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones (2002), played by Jack Thompson.

One scene, considerable weight

He exists in the finished film for a few minutes, in a wheelchair, explaining to Anakin that thirty men rode out after the Tusken raiders and four came back. It is the sequence that tips Anakin into the massacre, and Cliegg's flat, exhausted delivery of the odds is what makes the decision feel inevitable rather than melodramatic.

An unusual kind of decency

The purchase-and-marriage is easy to read cynically and the film does not invite that reading. What it establishes is a Tatooine where freeing someone requires money rather than principle, and where a farmer with very little of either does it anyway. That is a more useful piece of world-building than most of the planet's screen time.

Where to read him

The Attack of the Clones novelisation by R. A. Salvatore expands the homestead material considerably.
