Falynn Sandskimmer is a founding member of Wraith Squadron in Aaron Allston’s X-Wing: Wraith Squadron (Bantam Spectra, 1998). Like every original Wraith, she is there because the alternative was discharge — the unit was assembled specifically from pilots the New Republic had given up on.
Allston uses the intake to make a point that the first four X-Wing novels had circled without stating: military competence is not one quality but several, and a service that only measures the one it has always measured will keep throwing away people it needs.
