Jabba Desilijic Tiure is a Hutt crime lord operating out of a fortified palace on Tatooine. He is named in dialogue in the 1977 film, appears in a deleted scene restored for the 1997 Special Edition, and is fully realised on screen in Return of the Jedi (1983) as a puppet operated by a crew of three.

Structurally he is the reason the plot of A New Hope happens: Han Solo takes a passenger charter to Alderaan because he owes Jabba money. The Hutts are the galaxy's demonstration that the Empire's writ has limits — Jabba runs a sovereign operation in Imperial space and the Empire never touches him.
