L3-37 is a self-made droid built from astromech and protocol components, navigator and pilot to Lando Calrissian. The StarWars.com Databank describes her as known for "passionate advocacy for mechanicals' rights" and for a tendency to "speak her mind" without restraint. She was created for Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

The most radical droid in the franchise

Star Wars has always had a droid-rights problem it prefers not to look at: restraining bolts, memory wipes, a bar that refuses service. L3 is the first character to state the obvious out loud and act on it, and the film does not treat her as a joke for doing so.

Kessel

Her liberation of the Kessel mines is the plot's turning point — she frees the droid workforce, the riot she starts is what lets the heist happen, and she is mortally damaged in the crossfire. The film is careful about the sequence of causation: the crew's score depends entirely on her politics.

Inside the ship

Lando uploads her neural core into the Millennium Falcon's navicomputer, which is how the Falcon acquires its famously idiosyncratic navigation. It is a strange, unsettling ending — a person becoming infrastructure — and the film plays it as both a tribute and a small horror.

Where to read her

Daniel José Older's Last Shot (2018) follows the consequences of the upload from Lando's side, years later, and is the only substantial prose treatment of her.
