Lorth Needa is a human Imperial captain from Coruscant, played by Michael Culver in The Empire Strikes Back (1980). He commands the Star Destroyer Avenger in Death Squadron and is the officer who loses the Millennium Falcon.

The trick that beats him

Han Solo flies directly at the Avenger's bridge, attaches the Falcon to its hull, and waits for the Star Destroyer to dump its garbage before drifting away undetected. It is the single best piece of piloting in the original trilogy and it happens entirely inside Needa's sensor blind spot.

The apology

Unable to account for the disappearance, Needa takes a shuttle to the Executor to accept responsibility personally. Vader kills him. The scene is short and largely wordless, and it makes a specific point that Ozzel's death did not: Needa did nothing incompetent. He was simply out-flown, and he volunteered.

An officer with a service record

Canon material places him in the Clone Wars as a Republic lieutenant commander at the Battle of Coruscant before his Imperial commission — one of a number of officers whose careers run continuously from one government to the next, which is quietly one of the more damning things the continuity says about the transition.
