Reath Silas is a human Jedi Padawan created by Claudia Gray for Into the Dark (Disney–Lucasfilm Press, 2021). He was first mentioned in Light of the Jedi and debuted in Gray's novel the same year; his likeness was on the cover of Into the Dark when the initiative was announced in February 2020, before anyone outside Lucasfilm knew his name.
A scholar in an adventure story
Silas is the era's counter-Jedi. He wants to stay on Coruscant and read. His master, the Council member Jora Malli, is posted to Starlight Beacon, which drags him to the frontier at exactly the moment the frontier stops being safe. Gray uses him to ask a question the initiative keeps circling: whether the expansionist, outward-facing High Republic Order actually has room for a Jedi whose gift is the library.
Cohmac Vitus
After Malli's death he is apprenticed to Cohmac Vitus, a scholar-mystic with his own unresolved history, and the pairing sends both of them somewhere the Order would not have chosen. Their arc across Out of the Shadows and Midnight Horizon is one of the few sustained looks the era takes at Jedi who lose faith in the institution rather than in the Force.
