Zuckuss

A findsman who tracks quarry by religious ritual, which is not a metaphor and does not always work.

Zuckuss is a Gand bounty hunter, one of the six standing on the bridge of the Executor in The Empire Strikes Back (1980). StarWars.com records only that he "heeded the Empire's call for mercenaries to locate the Millennium Falcon and bring her fugitive crew to justice, receiving his orders on the bridge of Darth Vader's Super Star Destroyer".

The findsman

His defining trait came from outside the films entirely. West End Games' Galaxy Guide 3: The Empire Strikes Back (1989) established him as a findsman — a practitioner of an ancient Gand religious tradition in which a hunter locates prey through ritual, meditation and augury rather than through evidence. It is one of the best ideas the roleplaying supplements ever contributed, because it makes a masked background alien into a genuinely alien mind.

Paired with a machine

He is inseparable from 4-LOM, and the pairing is the point: an intuitive mystic and a droid built on pure inference, working the same trade. M. Shayne Bell's "Of Possible Futures: The Tale of Zuckuss and 4-LOM" in Tales of the Bounty Hunters (Bantam Spectra, December 1996) makes the relationship explicit — 4-LOM studies Zuckuss meditating, collecting and analysing data in an attempt to reverse-engineer a process that is by definition beyond reason.

What the ritual sees

In Bell's story, the findsman rituals grant Zuckuss a vision of the Rebel fleet gathering beyond the galactic rim. It is a rare Legends moment where the setting suggests that non-Jedi traditions might be perceiving something real, without ever quite saying so — and it is far more interesting than another hunter with a better rifle.
