Cal Omas is a male Alderaanian politician, the last Chief of State of the New Republic and the first of the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances. He belongs to the Del Rey New Jedi Order sequence, which ran from 1999 to 2003 and dismantled most of what the Bantam novels had built.
His election is the turning point. In 28 ABY, with Coruscant lost, the Senate reconvenes on Mon Calamari and — after a long campaign — chooses Omas. What he inherits is not a state so much as a rump: a legislature in exile, a fleet that has been losing for years, and a Jedi Order the previous administration had spent the war trying to control.
Omas’s significance is that he takes the opposite view. He brings the Jedi inside the government rather than treating them as a liability, and the Galactic Alliance that emerges under him is explicitly built on that arrangement. He then serves for twelve years without an election, which the later Legacy of the Force novels do not let him forget.
He is Star Wars Legends. His career is a useful counterweight to Borsk Fey’lya’s — two Chiefs of State, one who fought the Jedi and one who governed with them, and neither arrangement surviving contact with the next crisis.
