Cal Kestis is a human former Jedi padawan and the protagonist of Respawn's Star Wars Jedi games, introduced in Fallen Order (2019) and performed by Cameron Monaghan. When we meet him he is five years past Order 66, working a scrapyard on Bracca, cutting apart the Republic warships he used to serve aboard.
Jaro Tapal, and the survivor problem
His master, Jaro Tapal, died getting him into an escape pod when the clones turned. The game builds its entire progression system on that: Cal's Force abilities are not learned, they are recovered, unlocked through flashbacks he has been refusing to have. It is one of the few times a game mechanic has carried a real idea about trauma.
The holocron
The plot is a race for a Jedi holocron holding a list of Force-sensitive children across the galaxy — the next generation, indexed. Cal wants it to rebuild the Order; the Empire wants it to find them first. The ending is the interesting part. He destroys it, because a list of children is a weapon whoever is holding it, and because rebuilding the Order on the old terms would mean conscripting them exactly as he was conscripted.
Cere, Merrin and the crew
Cere Junda, the Nightsister Merrin and the pilot Greez give the games something the films rarely manage: a Jedi story in which the Jedi is the least experienced person in the room. Jedi: Survivor (2023) ages him five years and lets the strain show — a Knight running a resistance cell, increasingly willing to do things a Jedi should not.
Across media
He is the strongest argument in current canon that games are primary Star Wars texts rather than merchandise. Sam Maggs's novel Star Wars Jedi: Battle Scars (Random House Worlds, 7 March 2023) sits between the two games; he cameos as a youngling in Mike Chen's Brotherhood (2022); and Marvel's Jedi Fallen Order — Dark Temple (2019) precedes the first game.
Why he matters
Because he is canon's clearest statement about the Purge generation. Not "the Order will rise again", but a survivor deciding that some things should stay buried — and living with the fact that he is the last person qualified to make that call.
