Cilghal is a Mon Calamari Jedi, a niece of Admiral Ackbar in the Legends continuity, who comes to the Force late and from public life rather than from a training class. She first appears in Kevin J. Anderson's Dark Apprentice (Bantam, 1994); Leia Organa identifies her as Force-sensitive and sends her to Yavin 4.

She becomes the New Jedi Order's healer, which in Legends terms is a genuine speciality rather than a background detail — the ability to work at the cellular level, diagnose, and hold somebody together. During the Yuuzhan Vong war she is the Order's chief medical and research mind, working on the Vong's biotechnology while it is being used against her.

What makes her interesting on a reference site is how unlike the rest of the roster she is. She is middle-aged when she starts, she came from an ambassadorial career, and she has no interest at all in being a warrior. Every Jedi order in Star Wars fiction eventually needs someone like her, and Legends is one of the few continuities that actually staffed the post.

She remains in the Order through the Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi series, by which point she is one of its most senior figures — and is still, primarily, a doctor.
