Dryden Vos is the public head of the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate, played by Paul Bettany in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018). StarWars.com calls him "a contradiction: a pitiless enforcer known as a gangster of wealth and taste", entertaining the galaxy's elite aboard his yacht First Light and showing off a collection of antiquities.

The face, not the owner

The word the databank chooses — "public face" — is the whole point. Vos runs Crimson Dawn on behalf of a superior he refers to but does not identify, and the film's final scene reveals that superior to be Maul, alive, running a criminal empire from Dathomir decades after The Phantom Menace apparently killed him. Vos is a middle manager who does not survive his own performance review.

Facial tattoos and mood

His most distinctive feature is the striated marking across his face, which darkens and stands proud when he is angry — a physiological tell that makes negotiating with him a matter of watching his skin. It is a good piece of design economy: the film never has to tell you when he has decided to kill someone.

Crimson Dawn afterwards

The syndicate long outlived him. Qi'ra inherits his position at the end of the film, and Marvel's comics carried Crimson Dawn forward into the original-trilogy period as the driving force behind the War of the Bounty Hunters and Crimson Reign events — making a single 2018 film villain the origin point of a decade of publishing.
