Jon “Dutch” Vander is a human male Rebel Alliance pilot and the leader of Gold Squadron at the Battle of Yavin in A New Hope (1977), played by Angus MacInnes. He takes the first flight of Y-wings into the trench and is shot down inside it.
Gold Squadron’s run is the sequence that establishes the stakes of the film’s final act: three bombers, no manoeuvring room, and a targeting computer that cannot do what is being asked of it. Vander’s death is what makes Red Squadron’s attempt — and Luke’s decision to switch the computer off — mean anything at all.
