Marn Hierogryph — Gryph — is a Snivvian confidence trickster from Cadomai Prime with a long list of aliases and an even longer list of enterprises, operating a black market on Taris when the Padawan Zayne Carrick is assigned to bring him in. The two end up on the run together and, eventually, in business together.
John Jackson Miller originally wrote him as an Ortolan and changed species after artist Brian Ching pointed out that Ortolans have no readable facial expressions; Miller reached for the Snivvian instead, remembering the 1970s Kenner action figure. He has described the character as having "a little bit of Peter Lorre in him," with a dash of Steve Buscemi — which is about right.
