Teneniel Djo is a Force-using Witch of Dathomir of the Singing Mountain Clan, introduced in Dave Wolverton's The Courtship of Princess Leia (Bantam Spectra, April 1994) — the novel that introduced Dathomir itself.
The Witches of Dathomir
Her clan practises a Force tradition understood as magic and articulated through song and spell-casting, on a world where the women ride rancors and the custom is for a woman to capture the man she intends to marry. The novel plays this straight, and it is where a great deal of subsequent Star Wars comes from: the Nightsisters, Mother Talzin, Asajj Ventress and the whole Dathomiri strand of The Clone Wars are downstream of Wolverton's invention, though canon has substantially rebuilt it.
Capturing a Jedi
She takes Luke Skywalker captive by local custom, which he treats with more patience than most, and then allies with him against the Nightsisters and the Imperial warlord Zsinj. She marries Prince Isolder instead, becomes Queen Mother of the Hapes Consortium, and spends the rest of her life as an outsider ruling one of the most insular societies in the galaxy.
How she dies
She is poisoned during the Yuuzhan Vong War, in The New Jedi Order, in a succession plot aimed at putting her daughter Tenel Ka on the throne — which it does. Her death is the event that makes Tenel Ka Queen Mother.
