Theron Shan is the son of Grand Master Satele Shan and the Republic soldier Jace Malcom, conceived after the Battle of Alderaan and given away to be raised by Satele's old master Ngani Zho. He was trained as a Jedi in childhood until Zho worked out that the boy was not Force-sensitive at all.
The premise
That is the whole character, and it is a good one. Theron carries a name that is a byword for Jedi lineage — back through Satele to Bastila Shan and Revan — and he has to be useful without any of it. He joins the Republic Strategic Information Service and becomes one of its best field agents by being competent at a job the Jedi consider slightly disreputable.
Where he was built
He was hinted at before he existed: the Holonet section of the SWTOR website carried the phrase "a secret son" in Aurebesh beside Satele Shan. He was named in Star Wars Insider 124 and debuted in Alexander Freed's Dark Horse miniseries The Lost Suns (2011), then carried a major role through Drew Karpyshyn's Annihilation (Del Rey, 2012) and years of the game's expansions.
Partnership
The recurring pairing with the Sith Lord Lana Beniko — a Republic spy and an Imperial intelligence officer working together because both of their governments have been compromised — is the spine of the game's later storylines and, for a lot of players, the reason to keep going.
