Val is an explosives expert and the partner of Tobias Beckett, played by Thandiwe Newton in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018). StarWars.com calls her "a no-nonsense and occasionally prickly woman who is a crack shot with a blaster rifle" and "may be the most even-headed and capable member" of Beckett's crew.
She dies on the Vandor coaxium job, detonating the bridge charges herself when Imperial forces pin her down — a decision that saves the operation and does not save it enough. Her death and Rio Durant's in the same sequence are what put Beckett in debt to Crimson Dawn, which is the mechanism the rest of the film runs on.
