Derek Klivian — “Hobbie” — is a human male pilot from Ralltiir who defected to the Rebel Alliance with Biggs Darklighter and flew with Rogue Squadron at the Battle of Hoth. In The Empire Strikes Back (1980) he is Luke Skywalker’s wingman, and he ejects from his snowspeeder moments before it collides with an AT-AT walker.
The StarWars.com databank sums up the reputation in one line: a skilled if crash-prone pilot and a notorious sceptic. That is the whole character. Hobbie says the plan will not work, flies it anyway, survives by a margin nobody can account for, and then mentions that he said so.
The Legends novels made him and Wes Janson inseparable — Janson supplies the jokes, Hobbie the gloom — and between them they supply the institutional memory that lets a squadron of new pilots believe it will still exist next month. He fights at Hoth and Endor and keeps turning up in the New Republic material for years afterwards.
His defection alongside Biggs is one of the quiet facts that ties the Rebellion’s pilot corps together: the Imperial academies trained most of the people who eventually shot the Empire down. The fiction makes that point repeatedly and almost never underlines it.
