Garven Dreis is a human male Rebel Alliance pilot, Red Leader at the Battle of Yavin in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope (1977), played by Drewe Henley. He is the officer who questions whether a farm boy can handle an X-wing, accepts Biggs Darklighter’s word that he can, and then makes the first trench run himself.
His shot impacts the surface rather than entering the port. He is killed pulling away, and the attempt passes to Luke Skywalker. The film gives him no send-off — the war moves on mid-sentence — which is a large part of why the surrounding fiction has spent decades filling in the Rebel pilots of Yavin.
