Gavin Darklighter is a human male pilot of Rogue Squadron and a member of the Darklighter family, the Tatooine clan that produced Biggs Darklighter — who died flying at the Battle of Yavin. Gavin joins the reconstituted squadron in Michael A. Stackpole’s first X-Wing novel as its youngest recruit.
The series uses him as its coming-of-age line. Where Corran Horn arrives already skilled and insufferable, Gavin arrives out of his depth, and the books track him through the parts of a military career nobody puts in a trailer: being frightened, being condescended to, making a bad call, and eventually being the person other pilots look at when something goes wrong.
He is also the vehicle for one of the more pointed threads in the Bantam-era books. Gavin’s attachment to the Bothan pilot Asyr Sei’lar puts species prejudice inside the squadron rather than somewhere out in the galaxy, and the novels are willing to let it stay awkward.
Across the long arc of Legends he rises to command Rogue Squadron itself, closing a loop the first film opened: a Darklighter leading the unit a Darklighter died for. His homeworld is left blank here because the family’s connection to Tatooine is not, on the sources reached for this entry, a verified birthplace for him.
