Greer Sonnel is a human female born on Pamarthe who grew up to become a starfighter pilot, and who serves as Leia Organa’s pilot and chief of staff in Claudia Gray’s Bloodline (Del Rey, 2016).
Pamarthe is a world of famously aggressive flyers, and Greer’s background is competitive racing rather than the military — one of the small, useful ways Bloodline establishes that a generation has grown up since the war and has other things to do with a cockpit. She is the professional in Leia’s very small office, and the novel’s most reliable pair of hands.
Her private plot is a chronic illness she has concealed in order to keep flying, which the book treats with unusual patience: not as a tragic reveal but as an ongoing negotiation between what she wants to do and what her body will permit. Alongside it, and much more lightly, runs her attachment to the young New Republic lieutenant Joph Seastriker.
Greer is current canon and part of the best-realised supporting cast the sequel-era novels have produced. Bloodline is a political thriller with three people in the office; she is the one who keeps the office running.
