Jarael, born Edessa, is an Arkanian Offshoot: white-haired, pointed-eared, with human hands and eyes rather than the full Arkanian phenotype. She carries tattoos known as the Flames of the Crucible, which spell the name she took — it means "protector."
Her history is the darkest thread in the series. She was enslaved by the Crucible, a slaving organisation, and rose within it by beating the Zeltron Chantique, telling herself she was helping the others survive. John Jackson Miller created her as a supporting character for the Commencement arc alongside Zayne Carrick and Marn Hierogryph, and then gave her the second half of the run: once Carrick's conspiracy plot resolves, the comic turns into the story of bringing the Crucible down.
