Jyn Erso is a human female, daughter of the weapons scientist Galen Erso and Lyra Erso, raised in part by the insurgent Saw Gerrera after Imperial forces took her father. The StarWars.com Databank gives her homeworld as Lah'mu and describes her as "impetuous, defiant, and eager to bring the battle to the Empire." She was created for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) and played by Felicity Jones.
The film's real subject
Rogue One is about whether a cause deserves the people it consumes, and Jyn is the test case. She begins the film in an Imperial labour camp under a false name, with no politics at all — a person the Rebellion has already failed twice over — and the plot's job is to get her to choose it anyway, knowing exactly what it costs.
"Rebellions are built on hope"
The line lands in front of the Alliance council, in a scene where she is the least credentialed person in the room and is arguing for a mission the council refuses to authorise. Its afterlife has been enormous: it is now quoted back at the franchise as its own thesis, and it gets there without a Jedi, a lightsaber or a Skywalker anywhere in the frame.
Her father's message
The mechanism of the film is that Galen sabotaged the Death Star from inside and needed someone to carry the proof. Jyn's arc is therefore not about becoming a soldier but about becoming the person who can be trusted with her father's confession — which is why the reunion on Eadu, not the battle on Scarif, is the film's hinge.
Scarif
She and Cassian Andor die on the beach with the transmission sent. The ending was the film's boldest production decision and it is the reason Rogue One holds up: a Star Wars film in which the mission succeeds and no one who ran it survives to hear about it.

Alexander Freed's novelisation is the definitive text — it is substantially better than most film novelisations and gives Jyn a running interior argument the screenplay only implies. James Luceno's Catalyst covers her early childhood on Coruscant and Lah'mu and the slow strangling of her parents' careers.
