Lourna Dee is a Twi'lek from the colony world of Aaloth and one of the three Tempest Runners who command the Nihil beneath Marchion Ro. Charles Soule introduced her in Light of the Jedi (Del Rey, 2021), the novel that opened the whole initiative.
Tempest Runner
Cavan Scott's 2021 audio drama Tempest Runner is hers, and it is the best single piece of Nihil fiction the era produced. It fills in a biography no other marauder in the story gets: colonial aristocracy, enslavement, a stint as a cadet at the Republic's Carida Academy, desertion, mercenary work in scavenged Mandalorian armour, and finally the Nihil, where the sadism she has been carrying since childhood finally has an employer.
The prison
Tempest Runner then does something the franchise almost never does with a villain: it puts her in the custody of the Republic Correctional Alliance under a serial number, has a Jedi — Oppo Rancisis — ask for her real name, and lets her refuse to give it. The drama is a prison narrative with the sound design of a war story, and Jessica Almasy's performance carries it.
Impostor
For a stretch of Phase I she is the Eye of the Nihil, or is believed to be — the Republic and the Jedi spend considerable effort hunting the wrong leader while Ro operates behind her. It is the single cleverest structural trick in the era's plotting, and it works because Dee is plausible as the top of the organisation in a way Ro deliberately is not.
Phase III
She survives, which almost nobody in the Nihil does, and by the Marvel relaunch she is running with Jedi against the organisation she helped build — not redeemed, exactly, but no longer certain that she cannot be. The line she gets about it is one of the few moments in the initiative where a villain is allowed to be uncertain out loud.
Why she matters
Because the Nihil are, by design, an anti-ideology: raiders who exist to take. That is a difficult thing to build fiction on for three years. Dee is the answer — the one member with a past detailed enough to explain why a person ends up there, and enough interiority to make leaving conceivable.
