Marchion Ro is an Evereni male — a nomadic species marked by slate-grey skin and black eyes — and the Eye of the Nihil, the hereditary leader of the raider confederation that defines the High Republic era's central conflict. He was introduced in The High Republic: Light of the Jedi (Del Rey, 2021). He was raised aboard his family's ship, the Gaze Electric, and no birth world has been established.
Not a Sith
The most important thing about Ro is what he is not. He has no Force powers, no lightsaber and no interest in the dark side as a philosophy. He is a criminal executive with an inherited advantage he keeps to himself, and he runs the Nihil as a franchise operation — three tiers, a share of every raid, and a leader whose real product is the belief that he cannot be beaten.
The inheritance
His family's secret, and the weapon it eventually becomes, is the engine of the entire initiative: a thing the Jedi have no defence against and no framework for understanding, deployed by someone who has been waiting his whole life to use it. Charles Soule's Eye of the Storm comic series fills in the family history and is worth reading alongside the novels.
Canon only
Ro and the Nihil are post-2014 creations with no Legends counterpart.
Reading note
He is the best antagonist current canon has produced in prose, and for the same reason Thrawn works: he is beating the heroes with preparation and patience rather than with power, and the story does not cheat to let him.
