Marda Ro is an Evereni woman living on Dalna in 382 BBY as a member of the Path of the Open Hand, a cult that venerates the Force and holds that no living thing has the right to use it. She was introduced by Tessa Gratton and Justina Ireland in the young-adult novel Path of Deceit (Disney–Lucasfilm Press, 2022), the opening text of Phase II.
Phase II is a prequel about a family name
The second phase of the High Republic jumps back 150 years from the first, and its whole reason for existing is the surname. Marchion Ro, the villain of Phase I, is the Eye of the Nihil; Phase II is the story of how a religious commune on a farming world becomes the ancestor of a marauder empire. Marda is the hinge.
Kevmo Zink
Path of Deceit is, on its surface, a romance. Marda meets Kevmo Zink, a Pantoran Jedi Padawan investigating a stolen Force artefact, and the two of them argue theology while falling in love. It is a genuinely good YA novel about two teenagers who each believe the other has been indoctrinated, and both of them are partly right.
The Leveler
Zink dies in her arms, turned to stone by the creature the Path calls the Leveler — the first of the Nameless, the Force-devouring animals that will terrify the Jedi 150 years later. Marda holds him while it happens and concludes that the Jedi killed him. That single wrong inference is the load-bearing beam of the entire Nihil.
The Path of the Closed Fist
In Cavan Scott's Path of Vengeance (2023) she reconstitutes the wreckage of the cult as something militant, keeps Zink's lightsaber, and starts building the thing that eventually calls itself the Nihil. The rhetoric she uses is not villain rhetoric; it is the language of somebody who thinks she is preventing a catastrophe.
Why the character works
Because the initiative resisted the obvious move. Marda is not secretly evil, not corrupted by an artefact, not possessed. She is sincere, grieving, and wrong, and the fiction gives her every opportunity to be talked out of it and lets her decline. It is the most morally serious writing the High Republic has produced.
