Samakro is first officer of the Springhawk under Thrawn in Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Ascendancy trilogy (Del Rey, 2020–2021), and is promoted to senior captain with command of the ship over the course of the sequence.
He exists to supply the reader's scepticism from inside the bridge crew. Samakro begins convinced that Thrawn is a reckless outsider elevated above his competence, and the arc of the three books is the slow, grudging correction of that view — which is a far more interesting way to write a genius than having everyone admire him from page one.
