Vernestra Rwoh is a Mirialan Jedi, created by Justina Ireland for the High Republic publishing initiative and introduced in the middle-grade novel A Test of Courage (Disney–Lucasfilm Press, 5 January 2021). She is sixteen at the start of that book and has been a Jedi Knight for a year, which makes her a prodigy in an Order that does not normally hand out the rank to teenagers. StarWars.com gives her homeworld as Coruscant.
The weapon is the character note
Rwoh carries a purple-bladed lightwhip — a lightsaber whose blade can be extended into a flexible lash. Ireland has said the weapon was chosen to demonstrate how skilled the young Knight must be to wield something that dangerous. It is a neat piece of characterisation by object: the Order has decided she is good enough to be trusted with a thing that can cut its user in half.
A Test of Courage
Her debut is deliberately unglamorous. Rwoh is assigned to escort a twelve-year-old inventor, Avon Starros, on a cruiser bound for the dedication of Starlight Beacon, and treats the job as babysitting until the ship is sabotaged by the Nihil and the survivors are stranded on a jungle moon. The novel is about a Knight discovering that rank is not competence, in a book aimed at readers who are roughly the age of the people she is failing to protect.
Master and apprentice
After the destruction of the transport Steady Wing, Rwoh takes on Imri Cantaros — a Padawan whose own master died in the explosion — and the two of them carry a strand of the era through Out of the Shadows (2021) and the Marvel comic. A sixteen-year-old teaching a fifteen-year-old is not how the Order is supposed to work; the books know it, and use it.
The Acolyte
In June 2024 Rwoh became the first High Republic character to reach live action, played by Rebecca Henderson in the Disney+ series The Acolyte. The series is set around 132 BBY, a century after her novels, and she appears in it as a senior Jedi Master — the same person, considerably older, with a hundred years of consequences behind her. That is a genuinely unusual thing for a publishing-first character to be handed, and it retroactively made her the era's public face.
Phase III
She returns in the final stretch of the initiative, including Tessa Gratton's Temptation of the Force (2024) and Charles Soule's Trials of the Jedi (2025). Read in publication order she is one of very few figures who is present at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end — which is why she, rather than Avar Kriss or Elzar Mann, is the one the wider franchise reached for.
Where to start
A Test of Courage, and do not be put off by the shelf it sits on. The middle-grade novels in this initiative are not a junior version of the adult line; they are the same story told at a different altitude, and this one carries plot the adult books later depend on.
