Dash Rendar is a smuggler and mercenary, the player character of the 1996 LucasArts game Shadows of the Empire and a lead of Steve Perry's novel of the same year. He flies a freighter called the Outrider and works with a droid co-pilot named Leebo.

A deliberate substitute

Wikipedia's account of the game is blunt about the design brief: Rendar "shares similarities with Han Solo, including his vessel's resemblance to the Millennium Falcon". This is not an accident or a failure of imagination. The whole Shadows project is set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, which means Han Solo is frozen in carbonite for the entire duration and somebody has to fly the scoundrel role.

What he actually does

He is a Battle of Hoth veteran hired by Leia Organa, Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian, helps with the attempt to recover Han from Boba Fett, and assists Luke Skywalker in recovering the second Death Star plans — a job the films leave conspicuously unexplained, and which Shadows exists partly to fill in.

Ambiguous ending, deliberately

The novel implies he may be killed when debris from the destruction of Xizor's skyhook strikes the Outrider, and then declines to confirm it. Later Legends material took the hint and brought him back. He is Legends in full; no part of the Shadows project is current canon.
