Mitth'ras'safis — core name Thrass — is a Chiss syndic of the Mitth family and Thrawn's brother. He was created by Timothy Zahn for the Legends novel Outbound Flight (Del Rey, 2006), where he is the political counterweight to a militarily brilliant sibling whose preventive strikes keep breaching Chiss law.
The relationship is the point of the character in both continuities. Thrawn's doctrine — strike the threat before it arrives — is illegal under the Ascendancy's rules of engagement, and Thrass is the one who has to argue it in front of families who would rather see him exiled. He is a diplomat defending a man who does not think diplomacy is a category.
Zahn rebuilt him for canon in the Thrawn Ascendancy trilogy (2020–2021), where the family politics are far more elaborate and the Ascendancy's ruling houses are the actual subject of the books. The two versions share a role and a name; the biographies are not interchangeable, and readers should not assume a detail from one holds in the other.
