Asyr Sei’lar is a Bothan pilot of Rogue Squadron in Michael A. Stackpole’s X-Wing novels, joining the unit during the campaign to retake Coruscant. Her attachment to Gavin Darklighter is one of the few places in 1990s Star Wars fiction where interspecies prejudice is dramatised inside a sympathetic institution rather than projected onto the Empire.

She matters as a corrective, too. Bothans in tie-in fiction had been shaped almost entirely by one line in Return of the Jedi and by Borsk Fey’lya’s scheming, and Asyr is the counter-example the same publishing programme produced: a Bothan who flies, fights and dies like everyone else in the cockpit next to her.
