How can I tell whether AI assistants are citing my content?
There is no clean report for it, so you triangulate. Run a fixed list of your real buyer questions through the assistants your customers use, on a fixed cadence, and log whether you appear and what got quoted. Watch analytics for referrals from assistant domains. And watch for the behavioral signature: fewer sessions per question but higher intent, because the assistant handled the informational part.
Why there is no citation dashboard
Assistants do not publish an impressions report, their answers vary between runs and between users, and the set of sources cited for one question can change on a re-ask with no change on your end. Any product claiming a precise share-of-voice number for assistant citations is estimating from a sample, and you should treat it that way.
That does not mean it is unmeasurable. It means the measurement is a panel, not a census.
Running a panel you can actually trust
Fix the inputs so the only thing changing is the world. Same question list, same assistants, same cadence, same phrasing every time. Record three things per run: did you appear, which page was cited, and which competitors appeared.
The critical discipline is sample size. A single run is noise — non-appearance in one check tells you nothing. Repeat each question several times per cycle and track the appearance rate, not the appearance. If you cannot commit to that, do not report the number as a metric; report it as an observation.
The signals that show up in your own data
- Referral traffic from assistant domains. Small in volume, easy to segment, and worth watching as a trend rather than a level.
- Branded search movement. People who hear your name in an answer often search the name rather than clicking the citation.
- Session quality shift. Fewer informational sessions and a steadier count of contact actions is consistent with assistants absorbing the top-of-funnel visit.
- Sales anecdote. Callers who arrive already knowing your framing of a problem. Unscientific, and still the earliest signal most owners notice.
Judging it honestly
Nobody can hand you a verifiable citation share, and a vendor who does is inventing precision. What you can do is show that appearance rate on your priority questions moved after you published and structured the answers, and that the associated pages carry contact actions. Tying those actions to booked work is the part that makes the whole exercise defensible, which is where connecting content data to revenue intelligence earns its keep. The publishing side of that program is AI search optimization.
